Definition: Burn Injuries

Burns are caused by radiation, heat, fire, electricity, friction or chemicals. Burns cause over two hundred and seventy-five thousand deaths annually across the globe. Four thousand of those fatal burn injuries are Americans. Sadly, about 2,000 of those are kids in this country who are under the age of fifteen. Burns are classified by how much skin damage there is, how deep they are, and how much damage was caused to surrounding area including the underlying tissues. The exposed areas of our body are the most likely places to be burned including feet burn injuries, face burn injuries, finger burn injuries, hand burn injuries, neck burn injuries, thigh burn injuries, knee burn injuries, and arm burn injuries.

Was Your Burn Injury At Work?

Though most jobs have become steadily safer, burns still happen to people while they are working. Kitchen and restaurant fires, building fires, chemical burns, and welding burn injuries are just a few examples of work burn injuries. Our firm has been working workers’ compensation (as well as personal injury cases) for burn injuries since 1979 so you can rest assured that we have the experience to know how to handle your case and that we will fight for you.

1st Degree Burns

First degree burn injuries are when only the top skin layer has been affected. The usual signs for this degree of burn include some white plaque, swelling, redness, and pain.

2nd Degree Burns

Second degree burn injuries have happened once the burn has gone deeper than the outermost layer of skin. The burn might have gone as deep as the reticular dermis skin layer. These burns have significantly more pain than 1st degree burns. The signs for 2nd degree burns are redness, mild to severe pain, and blistering.

3rd Degree Burns

Third degree burns are very serious injuries. This type of burn has injured every layer of the skin and may have also injured the tissues under the skin. It is possible that third degree burns may not cause pain for the victim because they have damaged the nerves. The burn victim, though, will still be in pain as most 3rd degree burn injuries have second degree burns surrounding them. The signs that it is a 3rd degree burn are: the area will look charred, white, brown, or leathery.

Another System for Classifying

Doctors have developed another type of burn classification system because the burn’s characteristics are part of the name. This makes it easier for all involved to understand quickly. First degree burns are called Superficial Thickness; second degree burns are called Partial Thickness – Superficial; and third degree burns are named Partial Thickness – Deep. This system also has a fourth degree burn which refers to Full Thickness burn injuries.

Causes for Burn Injuries

The following are some causes for burn injuries:

  • Radiation burns (eg: from sunburns or radiation therapy)
  • Electrical burns (eg: electric shocks)
  • Fire (eg: touching the fireplace or campfire)
  • Heat burns (eg: hot metals or the stove)
  • Chemical burns (eg: strong acids like sulfuric acid)
  • Scalding (eg: from spilled hot coffee, steam or boiling water)
  • Construction Site Accidents;
  • Building Fire;
  • Work injuries;
  • Motorcycle accidents;
  • Tanning salon overuse or negligence;
  • On The Job Accidents;
  • Car, SUV and Truck accidents;
  • Defective Products; and
  • Welding burn injuries.

TBSA = Total Body Surface Area

Human bodies vary quite a bit in terms of shape, height, size, and weight. TBSA is a quick calculation technique to estimate how much total area of the body has been injured by the burn. It is called the Rule of 9s. It works by splitting the adult human body into eleven sections. Each section is estimated to be about 9% of the total body surface area. The remaining 1% refers only to burn injuries that happen to the victim’s genitals. The eleven sections refer to: upper back burn injuries, lower back burn injuries, right arm and hand burn injuries, left arm and hand burn injuries, head burn injuries, abdomen burn injuries, chest and neck burn injuries, right thigh burn injuries, left thigh burn injuries, left lower leg, calf, toes and foot burn injuries and right lower leg, calf, toes and foot burn injuries.

Burn Injury Treatments

Regardless of whether you have had a stomach burn, leg burn, toe burn, arm burn, hand burn, thigh burn, head burn, neck burn, chest burn or a burn anywhere else, you or a friend should contact help as soon as you can. Treatments will vary depending on the victim’s overall condition, the severity of the burn, the location of the burn, and what other injuries were also sustained. For burn injuries that are serious, treatments may include cosmetic surgery, skin grafting, the removal of dead skin (debridement), or other types of surgeries for burn injuries.

Automatic Critical Burn Areas

Some burns will automatically be classified as critical due solely on the location (as long as they are at least second degree burns). These areas are: a person’s face or genitals or if the burns include full foot burn injuries or full hand burn injuries.
